Civil – Lead Hand

The Lead Hand is responsible for following the direction of the site. In Charge in a safe, efficient and productive manner. Ensuring the quality of the job build meets or exceeds Berto’s standards, while being an advocate in building/maintaining an inclusive/respectful culture in accordance with the company values.

Major Duties Performed

  • Assisting In Charge in supervising the crew members and correcting all unsafe or inefficient practices
  • Anticipates the needs of the In Charge and takes lead when required
  • Represents Berto is a professional and respectful manner when speaking with property owners and tenants while ensuring the safety of the public
  • Ensuring Health and Safety practices are following according to WorkSafe BC and Berto’s Health and Safety Manual

Project Management

  • Reviews and ensures the crew has loaded all required material, equipment and tools for the task to be completed
  • Ensures tools, equipment and trucks are fueled and ready for use before leaving the warehouse
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints, as-builts and construction drawings in determining job build assignments and sequence in which tasks need to be completed
  • Read and understands all utility locates
  • Uses M-Scope or Locator to locate underground utilities on each job site
  • Assigns general work requirements into a prioritized work plan for the crew
  • Ensures crew compliance with company, client and project policies and procedures
  • Sets up confined space entry as per WorkSafe BC standards
  • Installs services boxes, service vaults, manholes, conduits and pilasters
  • Practices safe trenching and digging methods

Public Relations

  • Required to interact with members of the public in a professional manner on and around the job site

Health and Safety Duties

  • Understands, upholds and oversees the Health and Safety requirements of WorkSafe BC on the work site
  • Oversees the crew in ensuring the operation of tools, equipment and machinery are carried out according to prescribed safety procedures
  • Participating in safety/incident investigations
  • Ensures tools, equipment and machinery safety checks are completed prior to use
  • Ensures public safety around the job site (work zones)
  • Abides by Berto’s Health & Safety Manual & WorkSafe BC procedures at all times
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and reports any conditions that are not correctable in the moment, to the In-Charge and/or the Project Manager immediately
  • Abides by the Confined Space Entry procedures
  • Demonstrate leadership in Health, Safety and Environmental protection at all times

There will be occasions where the Superintendent will be asked to complete duties outside what has been outlined in their job description and may be required at times to work overtime.

Job Requirements:

  • 2+ years of civil construction/labourer experience
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Advanced understanding of construction principles and procedures, an asset:
    • Ability to identify a utility service
    • Ability to distinguish utility markings
  • Experience using small power tools an asset
    • Cut Off Saw
    • Plate Tamper
    • Drill
    • Jumping Jack
    • Generator
    • Air Compressor
    • Pneumatic Tool
    • Shovels, rakes, etc.
  • Access to reliable transportation

Work Environment

  • Regularly works near moving mobile equipment in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat & humidity, & exposure to dust & asphalt
  • Noise level may occasionally be loud 
  • Hazards associated with the construction industry including overhead & underground hazards
  • Needs to be aware of other trades personnel working in the same job site

Physical Demands

  • The Lead Hand is required to stand & for extended periods of time, lift & carry up to 50lbs objects on a regular basis & do repetitive tasks. Steel toe boots, hard hat & safety vest are to be worn at all times.

Organizational Scope

  • The Lead Hand reports directly to the In-Charge/Foreman
