Gilmore Project

Berto Contractors Red Line Design Feature

Timing:                  March 2023 – September 2023

Overview

Berto Contractors is pleased to contribute to ONNI Group’s Gilmore Place Project, a master-planned community that will transform Burnaby’s western gateway into an incredible urban hub for residents and visitors alike.

ONNI Group engaged Berto Contractors to lead the connection of BC Hydro’s feeder build from Lougheed Hwy and Gilmore Avenue to Lougheed Hwy and Dawson Avenue. This work involved placing large Pull Through Vaults, a Vista Switch, a PMT and LVE Pads. As well as the installation of an 8way both direct buried and concrete encased conduit system.

Challenges

  1. Unknown Utilities and Congestion
  2. Extra Peat
  3. Safety Issues

Solutions

  1. In many instances, the congestion of existing services and the use of hydrovac was required as the team was not able to dig within excavation requirements. The team harnessed its in-field expertise to quickly alter around the existing services without compromising timelines.
  2. Work was very challenging given the difficult ground conditions, among other, peat in the ground. The difficult conditions called for a Schedule 40 PVC Conduit, as well as a special wrap with geotextile fabric and lightweight fill which consisted of pumice.
  3. The excavation was located alongside a very busy pathway directly beside the Skytrain exit. This required additional safety precautions including limits of approach training.

End Result

Despite having unearthed multiple challenges, Berto's in-field team was able to navigate through each challenge without stopping work for even one day. This, because Berto had a team of in-house experts they were able to rely on the team to keep the project moving.
